Tech News Which Hit Headlines In March Over The Last 20 Years

Posted On March 27, 2018

It’s crazy to think that 20 years ago it was 1998; the iPhone wasn’t to be invented for a further 9 years and the world of tech was gearing up for the millennium bug.

For this reason, we thought we’d look at how many tech inventions and revelations were released in March over the years.

In March 2008 Limewire, the notorious download software of those born in the 1990’s, tried to go legal. It was pitched as a free peer-to-peer file sharing program but came under fire for the illegal activity which often took place on the platform.
Unfortunately, in 2010 they received an injunction where they were officially shut down in a federal court.

Music sources swiftly changed as more teens turned to legal sources like Apple’s iTunes Music in 2003 and Spotify which hit the markets in 2006.

On March 21st, 2006 the first tweet was posted and marked the founding of Twitter. The tweet came from Jack Dorsey, one of the founders, reading just a few words long; “Just setting up my Twttr”.
Other co-founders included; Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass who didn’t acquire due to the high price until they had proof of concept.

March is a significant month for Microsoft. In 1991 they released Microsoft Word 1.1, powerpoint 0.2 and Excel 3.0. Before Microsoft Word, Notepad was the usual text tool of choice.
Following the release in 1991, Microsoft then released Excel 4.0 in March 1994. To celebrate the release it included an easter egg animation of the Excel logo crushing the numbers 1-2-3.

PlayStation 2

On March 4th, 2000 the PlayStation 2 was released in Japan. It didn’t hit the markets around the world until October but was still successful.
With the ability to play both PS1 and PS2 games on one machine it is thought this compatibility helped it successfully compete with the Nintendo Game Cube and Sega’s Dreamcast.

Did you know Mozilla was initially formed in March 1998? Netscape Communications released most of the code base for its suite under an open source licence. The application they created was to become Mozilla. Mozilla 1.0 was eventually launched in 2002 where they later went on to release the well known Mozilla Firefox.
