Toxic electrical waste

What happens to electrical goods if they aren’t properly recycled?

It’s easy to bid them farewell and never think of them again. Have you ever wondered what happens to them; do they end up in the landfill, stripped down for reuse, or given to third world countries to use? Unfortunately, it’s none of these.

Reggie Yates a week in a toxic waste dump

A recent BBC documentary by Reggie Yates shows exactly what’s happening to thousands of electrical goods every single day. The TV show follows the life of a ‘burner boy’ working to re-sell the copper from our waste to earn money and provide for his a family at the detriment to his health.

Poor Health

Throughout the documentary, you see what happens to the people treating your old electricals; you see how damaging it is to their health and the lack of protection from toxic chemicals and raw sewage.

Unfortunately, it’s not just the people dealing with the goods that are being exposed to poor health and an unsafe environment. The thick plumes of smoke you see in the documentary are affecting the atmosphere around the world.

Recycling Licences

Throwing your electrical goods into the recycling bin isn’t any better; ALL electrical goods should be recycled with a certified waste carrier who recycles phones, computers, laptops in a safe and appropriate manner.

At CIYG we hold a Waste Carrier and T11 license from the UK environment agency. At CIYG ALL of our E-waste is treated in accordance with the WEEE directive, we can guarantee that none of our waste electronic product is sent to landfill or for treatment in developing countries.
